USAA is consistently ranked highest across customer reviews and third-party organizations. Its low rates, top marks for customer satisfaction and large market share solidify USAA’s top spot. It swept the competition in The Zebra’s customer satisfaction survey, securing first place in every category. How to find the best home insurance company for you

With all the choices out there, it can be overwhelming to find the best company to insure your home. Consider our expert tips on how to prioritize your needs and what to think about during this process.

Coverage options

All of the essential home insurance coverages should already be outlined in your home insurance policy. This comprises protection for your dwelling and other structures (at replacement cost), personal property, liability coverage, additional living expenses and medical payments to others.

The best insurance companies will offer some additional coverages — also known as endorsements — that bolster or expand your coverage in your homeowners insurance policy. A useful one to consider is upgrading to replacement cost  for your personal property coverage; with a standard policy, losses to home contents are typically based on actual cash value, which deducts depreciation. This will ensure you receive the full amount required to replace your property.

Learn more about homeowners insurance endorsements.

Bundling

If you already have auto insurance with Company A, it would be worth looking into bundling a new homeowners policy with the same company. Bundling discounts number as one of the most common discounts found at most insurance companies — and home and auto, in particular, is a popular bundling option.

However, keep in mind that even with a bundling discount, your rate could be better elsewhere; some insurance providers are just more expensive than others, even if your risk profile remains unchanged. Shopping and comparing quotes before the end of every policy period is one of the best ways to secure the cheapest rates. Don't be afraid to switch companies — if you receive a better quote from Company B midway through your policy with Company A, paying the initial cancellation fee could be worth the future savings.

Discounts

icon-money

The discounts offered by most insurance companies tend to be quite small, and the range of discounts also varies widely by company. But this doesn't mean they're not worth inquiring about.

Some discounts are automatically built into your insurance premium when you get a quote and can turn into sizable savings over time.

FAQs

USAA was the highest rated homeowners insurance company, according to The Zebra’s Customer Satisfaction survey. Erie Insurance and American Family also ranked highly, coming in at number two and three respectively.

The best rates for home and auto bundles come from USAA and State Farm. While these companies tend to offer the cheapest bundling rates, other insurers typically offer a steep discount for pairing your home and auto policies together.

The Zebra found that Amica, AAA and MetLife home insurance were the cheapest overall, ranging from $86 to $91 per month. USAA is also a great option for veterans and active duty service members looking for good homeowners insurance rates.

Unlike auto insurance, homeowners insurance is not required by law. However, if you have a mortgage, many lenders will require you to hold homeowners insurance in their lending agreement in order to protect their vested interest.

The amount of homeowners coverage you need depends on your personal situation. Your dwelling coverage limit should be enough to cover the full cost of rebuilding your home should disaster strike. Rebuilding costs can differ depending on location, so check with a local real estate agent or insurance rep if you need help coming up with that number. You’ll also want to factor in the value of your personal belongings and set a reasonable limit for your loss of use coverage should you be unable to live in your home for a period of time. Your home insurance company will be able to help answer questions and determine how much coverage that you will need.

Homeowners insurance deductibles work the same as auto insurance deductibles. You set your deductible amount at the start of your policy, and that number represents the amount of out-of-pocket costs you are responsible to pay before insurance kicks in for covering repair costs. The higher deductible you set, the lower your premium will be.

Buying homeowners insurance is a fairly straightforward process. Start by getting a home insurance quote from a provider based on your unique needs. You can get quotes online or call in to a companies to speak to an insurance agent.. It is also always a good idea to compare quotes from many companies to make sure you are getting the best value for your policy. For this, The Zebra has you covered.

While homeowners insurance covers damages due to a variety of perils, notable exclusions are losses due to natural disasters like earthquakes and floods. Still, many companies offer endorsements for these, or you could purchase a separate flood insurance policy through the national flood insurance program.

Compare quotes to find a homeowners policy with the best value.
