If you've read our 2022 State of Insurance, you know that there are a lot of factors that go into the pricing of your auto insurance premium. From where you live to who you are and, of course, your driving record. The vehicle you drive also has a big impact. The age of the vehicle and its make and model are all factors.

In 2021, vans were the cheapest vehicle type to insure, followed by trucks and SUVs. Cars had the greatest average premium.

High-performance vehicles, sports cars, electric vehicles and luxury SUVs are among the most expensive cars to insure, based on their high cost-of-replacement and expensive parts. More common, low-MSRP models — like those listed below — are typically less expensive cars to insure.

Without further ado, here are the cheapest vehicles to insure in 2022. (Note: these are all 2021 models, based on our data from fall of 2021).

1. Mazda CX-3 Sport

The 2021 Mazda CX-3 Sport is an agile crossover with a good fuel economy. It has a relatively low MSRP and a user-friendly infotainment system. As a subcompact SUV, it does lack rear storage space. It was the cheapest car by make and model to insure based on our 2021 research. Interestingly, as a whole Madza ranks sixth on our list for cheapest average premiums.

By the numbers

Average annual insurance premium: $1,440

MSRP: $20,790

2. Toyota C-HR LE

Number two on our list is also a subcompact crossover. The Toyota C-HR is an extra-small SUV designed to combine the ease of a sedan with the raised seating of an SUV. The car has a starting price above the Mazda, and also a slightly higher average premium. While this models ranks highly on our cheapest to insure list, Toyota as a whole is actually 15th on the list of cheapest makes, putting it fairly middle of the pack.

By the numbers

Average annual insurance premium: $1,473

MSRP: $25,095

3. Ford Transit Connect XL

Remember above where we mentioned vans were the cheapest to insure? Coming in third on our list is the Ford Transit cargo van. The reason vans can be less expensive is in part because they are usually considered family vehicles, meaning older and more experienced drivers who are less likely to take risks on the road. Vans are also bigger than sedans, and tend to have better safety ratings. Finally, vans are not usually high on thieves' priority lists, so they're less likely to be stolen. Ford is the ninth cheapest make to insure.

By the numbers

Average annual insurance premium: $1,491

MSRP: $25,175

4. Fiat 500X Pop

In addition to the Fiat 500X model being fourth on our list, Fiat as a whole is the number one cheapest make to insure in 2022. In terms of the model itself, the Fiat 500X is (surprise, surprise) another crossover SUV with a coupe-like profile.

By the numbers

Average annual insurance premium: $1,499

MSRP: $26,840

5. Honda CR-V EX

Continuing in our list of compact SUVs, the Honda CR-V offers a quick acceleration, upscale cabin and relatively low insurance premiums. Honda as a whole is 10th on our list for cheapest makes, but this model vaults to number five.

By the numbers

Average annual insurance premium: $1,500

MSRP: $25,350

6. Subaru Crosstrek

Yet another subcompact SUV, the rugged Subaru Crosstreck comes in at six on our list of cheapest cars to insure. This 2021 model offers car-like driving with more ground clearance and a truck-like styling. Subaru as a whole is actually ranked higher, at number five for lowest average premium.

By the numbers

Average annual insurance premium: $1,502

MSRP: $23,295

7. Dodge Ram Promaster City

We take a break from our regularly scheduled list of crossover SUVs to add our second van to the list! Coming in at number seven is the Dodge Ram Promaster City. This Dodge van is powerful and efficient and can be adapted for many business and lifestyle needs. Dodge as a whole comes in way down at 18th on our list of cheapest makes to insure.

By the numbers

Average annual insurance premium: $1,507

MSRP: $25,715

8. Jeep Compass Altitude

Welcome back to compact SUV territory! The Jeep Compass offers fantastic off-road capabilities for a small SUV and comes in our list of cheapest vehicles to insure at number eight. Jeep as a whole ranks higher as an overall rank, coming in at number three.

By the numbers

Average annual insurance premium: $1,510

MSRP: $27,335

9. Ford F-150 XL

Our first truck of the list, coming in at number nine is the Ford F-150. It also has the distinction of being the most popular vehicle in America based on 2021 annual sales. Because it's a truck, it has the highest MSRP of any of the vehicles so far on our list. But that's about to change with number 10...

By the numbers

Average annual insurance premium: $1,525

MSRP: $30,985

10. GMC Savana G2500

Rounding out our list of cheapest vehicles to insure for 2022 is the GMC Savana. This model is the cargo versus passenger van model. It's the third cheapest to insure van on our list. Interestingly GMC as a whole also comes in at number 10.

By the numbers

Average annual insurance premium: $1,527

MSRP: $33,000
